If you’re searching for Kudo training in Washington DC or authentic Kudo classes in DC, BETA Academy is proud to be the only official Kudo Branch certified by the IKF – International Kudo Federation in the region. Kudo is one of the most complete modern martial arts systems in the world—blending the realism of mixed martial arts with the structure, discipline, and ranking system of traditional budo.

Kudo (Daido Juku) is a Japanese mixed martial art sport that blends full-contact punches, kicks, knees, elbows and headbutts with throws/takedowns and submission techniques. Founded by Takashi Azuma in 1981. It was created to combine the most effective elements of:

  • Kyokushin Karate striking
  • Judo throws
  • Wrestling takedowns
  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu style submissions

What makes Kudo unique is its helmet-based competition format, allowing:

  • Punches, Elbows and Headbutts
  • Kicks and knees
  • Throws and takedowns
  • Ground fighting and submissions

Because athletes wear protective headgear, Kudo competition safely allows techniques that most traditional martial arts restrict. The result? A realistic, full-spectrum combat system that develops well-rounded martial artists—striking, clinching, and ground work. Along with these elements, it stresses the “Reigi” or respect and etiquette in its tradition. In this sense it is a “Modern Budo” that has already spread to more then 80 countries around the world.

Why Train Kudo?

Kudo is ideal for:

  • Martial artists seeking a complete striking + grappling system
  • BJJ or Judo practitioners who want to integrate striking
  • Karate practitioners wanting more realism
  • MMA athletes who value structured ranking and traditional discipline

Training includes:

  • Stand-up striking combinations
  • Clinch fighting and knees
  • Judo-style throws and trips
  • Ground control and submissions
  • Conditioning and mental toughness

Kudo emphasizes respect, discipline, and character development alongside competitive excellence.
