How to Prepare for Your First Martial Arts Class – Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Muay Thai at BETA Academy

August 19, 2025

Stepping onto the mats for the first time can feel both exciting and intimidating. Whether you’re looking to try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) or Muay Thai, preparation is key to making the most of your first class. At BETA Academy, we specialize in these two world-class martial arts, and we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

What to Expect in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses on leverage, technique, and strategy rather than brute strength. Don’t worry if you’re not flexible or in peak shape—BJJ is designed for all body types and fitness levels.

  • Gear: For your first class, bring comfortable athletic wear (no zippers or pockets). If you have a gi (uniform), bring it, but it’s not required.

  • Mindset: Come ready to learn, tap often, and focus on technique over strength.

  • Tip: Hydrate and eat a light meal before class—you’ll be moving and drilling nonstop.

What to Expect in Muay Thai

Known as “the art of eight limbs,” Muay Thai uses punches, kicks, elbows, and knees in a dynamic full-body workout.

  • Gear: Comfortable workout clothes, and if you have them, hand wraps and gloves (we provide gear if you don’t).

  • Mindset: Be ready to sweat! Expect shadowboxing, pad work, and beginner-friendly drills.

  • Tip: Stay relaxed—Muay Thai is as much about rhythm and timing as it is about power.

How to Get the Most Out of Your First Class

  1. Arrive Early – Give yourself 10–15 minutes to meet your coach, sign in, and settle in.

  2. Listen & Observe – In martial arts, details matter. Watch closely and don’t hesitate to ask questions.

  3. Leave Ego at the Door – Everyone starts somewhere. Progress comes with consistency, not comparison.

  4. Respect the Community – Martial arts culture thrives on respect, humility, and teamwork.
